WebOct 20, 2016 · In fish there are two gas exchange mechanisms, the first of which is the parallel flow mechanism found in cartilaginous fish such as Dogfish. In this process the oxygenated water and the deoxygenated blood flow in the same direction. As the water flows in through the gills the blood is flowing through the gill lamellae in the same direction. Air breathing fish can be divided into obligate air breathers and facultative air breathers. Obligate air breathers, such as the African lungfish, are obligated to breathe air periodically or they suffocate. Facultative air breathers, such as the catfish Hypostomus plecostomus, only breathe air if they need to and can otherwise rely on their gills for oxygen.
